| Gaps for Grumpies was created to respond to the increasing number of non-traditional ‘gappers’ - people whose children have left home and those who may have just retired or want a break between jobs. Gaps for Grumpies is particularly for those who want the opportunity to give something back, to travel to less traditional destinations or to experience the world`s possibilities themselves - or they may just be asking "Why should their children have all the fun?"
Our ethos
We bring together development projects and holiday travel to offer grumpies a unique experience. We aim to assist in community development, whilst at the same time enabling individuals to gain new exciting and challenging experiences through work and holiday travel. Specialising in group projects, our management, UK staff, and overseas crew focus all their resources and passion into making your Gap for Grumpies lifechanging for you and your host community.
Our History
Gaps for Grumpies was founded in 2006 by Mike Parker, who left his job as CEO of a large organisation in Newcastle to join John Lawler, the founder of Madventurer, who have been leaders in development travel for students for the last 8 years. John's first experience of Africa was as teacher in Ghana during a gap year in 1998. In recognition of his contribution to the village in which he taugh, John was "enstooled" as Ngoryi-Fia (Chief of Development) and renamed Torgbui Mottey I , which translates as Chief Pioneering Pathfinder through the Forest.
Madventurer, has since been awarded the Shell Livewire UK Award for Sustainable Development and the Prince’s Trust Best Business Award. We also support The Mad Foundation, a registered charity (No.1111805) which Makes A Difference in some of the world’s poorest countries by providing funding and support at a grassroots level.

By working with Madventurer, who has been successful operating and expanding since 2000, and as an ABTA bonded travel company, we are ideally positioned both in the UK and overseas, to satisfy the increasing number of people wanting to take an exciting and meaningful time overseas.
