The "Gaps for Grumpies" programme for 2007/8 includes projects in West Africa (Ghana), East Africa (Tanzania and Kenya) ,Latin America (Peru), Asia (India) and the South Pacific (Fiji)
Possible Projects
In Ghana, Peru, Tanzania, India and Kenya
Helping on a building project:
- classrooms, toilet blocks, playgrounds
- school libraries, bridges, drainage
- accommodation for nurses, fish farms
(Please note no qualifications, or even a passion for DIY is required. Just a willingness to muck in and work under direction)
Helping in schools / orphanages
- teaching, looking after children
- caring, running activities
(Please note no teaching qualifications are required. For some of the teaching projects in Peru, however, Spanish is essential)
In Fiji
Sports Coaching
- Rugby, soccer, tennis, cricket
- Netball, hockey, basketball
- Swimming, volleyball
(Please note no qualifications are required just good basic skills and bags of enthusiasm!)
Qualifications, experience and particular expertise are all a bonus. Please make sure we know about them.
Potential Holidays
We can offer a wide range of holidays (of varying length and degrees of luxury) allowing you to enjoy/explore/relax after your project.
We appreciate many grumpies will want a bit of comfort and luxury after a project which may have been in a village without electricity or running water.
The holidays listed below which have a degree of luxury (and therefore will be a bit more expensive) are marked with a *.
We can even organise bespoke holidays for you (eg a week comprising a safari in Tanzania and a beach resort in Zanzibar). Just let us know what you are looking for.
Ghana:
- 21 days overland to Timbuktu - Djenne in Birkino Faso, Dogon country in Mali, Beaches and rainforests in Ghana
- 8 days around Ghana - Slave castles, stunning beaches, wildlife and rainforests *
Peru:
- 21 days Southern Peru and Bolivia - Ancient cities of Arequipa, La Paz, Cusco, Lake Titikaka and Machu Picchu.
- 14 days Southern Peru - Arequipa, Puno, Cusco, and Machu Picchu *
Tanzania:
- 10 days Serengeti Lodge Safari - Game drives in Serengeti and Tarangire game parks, Ngorongo crater and Arusha. *
- 15 days Selous and Spice Islands - Internal flights taking you to Selous game reserve, Mafia Island and Zanzibar.
Kenya:
- 21 days Beach and Bush - The Rift valley, Lakes Naivasha and Nakuru, Samburu and Maasai Mara Game Parks, Climbing Mount Kenya and the beaches on the Indian Ocean
- 15 days Classic Kenyan Safari - Game drives and Safari Parks- Tsavo, Amboseli, Maasai Mara, and Lake Nakuru in style *
Fiji:
- 6 days Island Adventure Cruise - Cruise the stunning islands in comfort . See the coral , the beaches the waterfalls with opportunities for a wide range of waterbased activities *
- 21 days Fiji Island Safari - Serious activities and serious relaxation - white water rafting, kayaking and the opportunities to climb Fiji`s highest mountain and to learn scuba diving.
India:
- 15 days Southern India including the temples of mysore, Periyar Sri Meenakshi and Medurai Srirangan and the Trichy and dutch palaces.
- 10 days the golden triangle of Delhi, Jaipur and Agra – also game drives at Sariska National park and Bharatpur. *
